Today’s subject is one that is very common, but not discussed enough in detail: Contact lenses and their responsible use. First, we need to define what we are talking about. Contact lenses are prosthetic medical devices, with optical properties and prescriptions, worn on the anterior surface of the eye, in order to allow the patient to see well, comfortably, and in good health. This is how your eye care practitioner should approach fitting contacts for you, and also to keep you in the best possible lenses that current technology will allow.
Every day in my office I see patients that have been wearing contact lenses that have been in the marketplace since the 1980s! I also constantly see ads that say “Free eye exam and 1 year’s supply of contacts for only $19.95!” I exaggerate a little, but my question is: Do you want to treat your precious eyes and eyesight that way?
A non-medical analogy might be your cell phone. Are you still using a 2 pound flip phone? Probably not. You want to use the latest technology for your phone and computer.
You should do the same for your eyes!
There are so many new advancements in contact lens technology - incredible polymers, digitally reproduced high definition soft and gas permeable designs, hybrids, multifocals, etc. Please make sure you take good care of your eyes and vision. Visit your eye doctor annually, and make sure you get the lenses and services you deserve!
